Controversial and Thought-Provoking Articles for the Savvy Christian

Savvy Article #0910

We’ve seen these people before . . . these intimidators. They make themselves look big at our expense. They take advantage of our fears, steal our power, and cause us to feel defeated.

Yes, and here is a book that coaches a person on how to be just like ‘em.

Well, yes and no. It really isn’t shocking that there are intimidators out there, and yes, it would be shocking if a college-age Christian woman had read this in order to practice the techniques. But she hadn’t. No, instead she read it in order to protect herself.

That woman was me, and in 1977 I did indeed read WINNING THROUGH INTIMIDATION because, after years of feeling emotionally beaten and pushed to the ground by my harsh and cruel family, I was feeling desperately powerless. I wanted to understand how others had done this to me.

For instance, I was fascinated to read that someone who makes you wait a very long time may actually be doing it on purpose. It’s an intimidation technique.

Then there’s the technique of hiring a bevy of secretaries and assistants (think M.C. Hammer) to follow you wherever you go. The author, Robert Ringer, actually tried this one, and it worked. Who but someone important would have an entourage?

Another intimidation technique is the “expert from afar.” It is based on the fact that when an expert is local, no one gives him much respect (Jesus said just as much, “a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country and in his own house,” Matt. 13:57). So, if the expert is from far away—let’s say, an organization must fly someone in from another state, or another country, and pay many many expenses—THEN he is thought of as a guru. He is . . . the “expert from afar.” An astute intimidator will play this to the hilt, especially if he has cult-leader aspirations.

I could go on, but the point is: once I knew what the intimidators around me were doing, I felt free. I could see their ploys, and I knew they just wanted me to feel cowed. Truly, this simple understanding not only released me from fear, it also allowed me to laugh (in private) at little people overcompensating through intimidation.

Robert Ringer’s worldview is harsh in this book. I heard he has softened since he wrote this many years ago, but it does show a man who has a dark and defensive mentality. I am not advocating taking on this worldview, but I do believe in knowing the tactics of the Enemy.

There will always be intimidators, but we don’t have to be afraid of them. “And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, . . .” I Pet. 3:14 NASB

So tell me, has anyone ever intimidated you?  What did you do?

  1. Jan says:

I’ve seen the waiting technique on TV. Do you suppose that Dr’s employ this technique? Great post.

  2. I have often wondered, Jan, if Doctors do this, yes. Otherwise, they seem to be very bad at scheduling. Could they ALL be that bad at scheduling? I don’t think so!
