Awkward Family Photos

Mini-article #0902

Pristine, beatific faces stared back at me as I gazed at the portrait photograph of my family. It had been taken in the ’50s, and my brothers and cousins looked so young.

My mother told me how long it had taken to get that perfect photo. In order to get this portrait done professionally, the family had spent what was to them a lot of money, and they were going to get a perfect picture if it killed everyone.

But the children weren’t cooperating (surprise?) and the squirming and the pinching each other and the giggling were sucking time.

Finally, all the children looked at the photographer with perfect smiles. No one grimaced, looked askance, or pinched the person next to them. Perfection.

At least, that is what my mother thought until she looked at the photo years later. In cousin Jackie’s hand, perfectly held, was a wad of gum. Anybody with eyes should have seen it!

Awkward family photos aren’t new or exclusive to my family. If you want to see what I’m talking about, go to http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com and take a look. Most of the photos will make you smile. Some will make you laugh out loud.
